Important information for parents

Registration is the period when students register for courses for either fall or spring semester. The registration is online based and its duration is two weeks. Students sign up for the courses and send their study cards to their advisors for approval. After getting advisor’s approval, students complete their registration by sending their study cards to registrar office.

Credit load: student has 30-credit limit + sport per semester. Student must complete 240 credits for four years of studies. Credit system requires at least 4 hours of independent study for one-hour class.

Add/Drop period is given to students to make changes in their schedules. During add/drop period students can drop/add courses in their schedules. Add/drop period lasts for two weeks at the beginning of each semester.

Mid-progress evaluation is the period in the middle of each semester when every professor fills out the evaluation form concerning any struggling students in his/her course to report about them to their academic advisors.

Probation is divided into two types:

  • Academic Probation: if a student’s semester GPA falls below 2.0, s/he will be placed on academic probation. If a full-time student fails to earn a minimum semester GPA of 2.0 and 24 credits hours, s/he will be dismissed from the university.
  • Financial Aid Probation: if a student’s cumulative GPA falls below 2.7 for need-based financial aid, 3.0 or 3.2 for merit-based financial aid, s/he will be placed on financial aid probation for two semesters. If a full-time student fails to earn minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7, 3.0 or 3.2, s/he will lose his/her financial aid.

Withdrawal “W” grade is a grade that doesn’t influence GPA and students can take withdrawal grade when they are in a high risk to fail a course. The consequences of withdrawal grade are credit deficiency, waste of money and time. The deadline for withdrawal grade is 10th week of every semester.

Summer School usually lasts for one month. Summer school is offered for students who have credit deficit and need to graduate in time. The maximum limit is 18 credits.

Academic Advisor provides information on courses of instruction, learning resources and University policies and procedures that will assist students to pursue their intellectual goals.

Major is an area of study in which the student’s principal interest lies and in which the student seeks an undergraduate degree.

Minor is a secondary area of study in which the student may choose or concentrate to complement the major.

Double Major is two main areas of study, in which student receives two undergraduate degrees.

General Education courses are the courses that include such as courses as Kyrgyz, Russian languages, natural science, math, art, History of Kyrgyzstan, First Year Seminar, etc.

Required courses are the major courses that students must take to complete the major.

Elective courses are the courses that students can take regardless of their major requirements.

Checklist is the list of general courses and major courses that students must complete during their four year of studies.
